Life Lessons from my 81-Year-Old Dad

What would an 81-year-old man tell his 40-year-old self?

Today, I chat with my dad – a living testament to the fact that you don't need much to have a truly happy and fulfilling life. My dad has been my best friend since the very beginning, and is a living, breathing example of how to lead an honest, purposeful and successful life. He's like those dads you see in black and white movies who spend Saturday mornings with their son, teaching him how to adjust the tappet clearances on his first car. That's my dad to a T.

He taught me how to drive when I was eight years old, and he gave me the means to practice my skills until I was old enough to earn my license. He showed me how to get a fire going in the rain-soaked mountains of our countless camping adventures, and taught me the value of working a problem until a solution was found. And he was always available. Always.

He also showed me how I should conduct myself as a husband, a father and a businessman. He demonstrated that hard work, honest dealings and time spent in nature at regular intervals are a recipe for peace of mind, happiness and meaning. And most of all, he showed me the importance of living an authentic life – one which would withstand the toughest scrutiny.

In this episode, we work our way through a couple of cigars and two large glasses of Bailey's Irish Cream, as we cover off topics as diverse as being a child of war, travelling the outback with almost nothing, dealing with dishonest people and staying away from rich women who want to pay for your work in kind…

It's a very relaxed and pleasant stroll (complete with the sound of chortling birdlife), and one to listen to over your own glass of something nice.

I hope you enjoy this wonderful skip down memory lane with a man who has cracked the simple secrets to a life most of us want.

And if this is your first visit to Midlife Tribe, you can get up to speed nice and quick by starting here.

I love Peter's show – he has such an honest and open approach that I really relate to and find easy to listen to. As someone in his mid 40's myself I really relate to Pete's info. It's refreshing to hear that you're not on your own in this chapter of life. Thanks Pete.

From Episode 1, Peter's message resonated with me. I'm in my second act and I can relate to the bumps life threw me to the future I see ahead. I'll be subscribing and following his journey.
